Postcard To Lona In Tasmania's terminal I compared the curve of an unfamiliar backside to the fading memory of once was. In comparison I learned some memories are just too good to ever let go and this reality is a barometer of my future. A reptilian mind dreams with or without forgiveness. It is a subconscious medium that will forever imprison you in my heart and soul.

Dane, so it's the curve of her...soul, right? Your poetry always has such an ache in it. It has a way of touching the old wounds you recreate. If we could only remember "this reality is not the barometer of our future." Enjoyed this. Penelope

D, Enjoyed the curvacousness of this poem bending between past, present and future. Jim My books are available at http://www.lulu.com/jimdoss. Visit Loch Raven Review at http://www.lochravenreview.com.

Beautifully written piece. I enjoyed it very much. I only didn't understand the reptilian mind. I know it is only me and that once explained it will make sense to me...still, I had to ask myself why his mind was reptilian. Nochipa |

Nochipa --for a simplified explanation, go to http://s23.org/wiki/Reptilian_Mind (it's more a man thing, I suppose, but both men and women share the same psychology that governs it). Gary --not as good as I once was but always good once as I ever will be. Penelope --thank you for reading and seeing the "soul" in it. *smile* Jim --interpreted exactly as intended. Dale --what can I say? It was me. You're a fine soul too. back at ya! D |

Dane... Funny how a random wiggle can jiggle the old memory banks. One thing I'm not connecting is the title... unless the speaker was sitting in their living room, looking at a postcard for and from the Tucson airport. If such is the case, the photographer might be highlighting the wrong features. That reptillian mind had me thinking that you were alluding to the cliche that men are snakes.... not that I think that's fair to snakes, since I think they are fascinating, necessary critters. All question marks aside, I enjoyed this to no end and if you don't find my remarks useful, I wouldn't blame you if you turned the other cheek. Cary... Cary --you're right about that random wiggle. Though I must admit, the one's that inspired me in Tucson were anything but pretty. That's probably what made me "homesick" to write this in the first place. As for the title, well, it was a shot in the dark alluding to a lack of longer communication. I wrote it originally with one soul in mind and have since decided it belongs elsewhere. I visited Tasmania in March and hadn't seen the first (ex) wife in over 30 years. We rarely wrote in all that time but did manage to bridge the gap a little while I was there. One of the things she wanted me to do was to take a picture of her dogs posterior for posterity, and somehow, I managed to get her in it as well. I'm going to print the picture this evening, along with this poem, and send it to her. I'll post a follow-up with the picture in my profile later tonight. As they say, a picture is worth a thousand-words. D

Cary --the terms are confused (to say the least) but I'm sending the picture anyway. The one I posted in my profile (click on my name) had to be cropped something awful and its color rendering reduced, but it's the best I could do to get it under 75 KB to post it here. Check it out if you dare. D

As always, I enjoy your comments almost as much as your poetry, Dane. This one is a keeper--and matched with the photo--priceless! ljc http://ljcbluemuse.blogspot.com/

Thanks, Lisa. Actually, I sometimes wish the poem was as good as my off the cuff comments. Still working on that last stanza and I must have changed it a hundred times since its conception. Matching the poem and picture was a fluke but I believe it will be well received when it's finalized. I'm going to burn both as a postcard using my scanner and a photo program I have. Put it in a nice frame and send it off. It might not earn me any points but it's the thought that counts, no? D |

Dane, "In comparison I learned some memories are just too good to ever let go and this reality is a barometer of my future." Absolutely words entwined in my soul. Even if those memories may be painful. Lori

Dane, The pic is marvelous--what a perfect catch. Don't know how you created this postcard but I'd love to do that with some of my own works. What program did you use? The poem is a beautiful ache captured from a moment genuinely felt. I think that's why it has so much power for me. Rilke says " A work of art is good if it has arisen out of necessity”. You have made us feel your need. Well done. E

E --Jasc Paint Shop Photo Album 5, but I’m sure there are better ones out there. It came with my Dell. The trial period ended so I purchased it yesterday for $30.00 as a download over the Internet. If you can afford it, they have professional programs all the way up to $100.00 and probably well worth the money if you’re into creating graphic art for business purposes. My little photo shop 5 more than meets my needs though and I’m going to be getting lots of use out of it. What I’m enjoying most is having the ability to crop and resize different pictures for various applications. My only complaint is having to buy my ink cartridges through Dell. They cost a small fortune and don’t last very long if you make a lot of prints. They have the monopoly on that item so I might be looking to get a different printer this year. Possibly an even better one. D |

Thanks for the tip D. I am in desperate need of a new computer (everything but monitor) and not sure if I'm going to go with Dell again (although she's been a trusty one since I bought her). Sounds like $30.00 is well worth a good graphics tool. I need to be able to create posters and flyers and brochures and such. Your advice helps on the research side. Thanks much! E |
